Civil or structural engineer

Opportunity to join a successful team of dedicated professionals based in Birmingham, Alabama in a market leading business supplying highly-engineered, fabricated metal products to the transportation infrastructure industry.

Summary

This position requires very little travel or construction site visits. The engineering team supplies professional expertise for highway construction contractors across the United States and for the on-site metal fabrication plant. The company’s primary focus is on engineering and fabricating steel structures. The company believes strongly in teamwork and cross-functional collaboration among all team members.

  • Licensed Professional Civil or Structural Engineer in at least one state
  • Preferred 1-5 years of experience in a related engineering field (cell tower, utility structure design, etc.)
  • NCEES Record a plus ▪ Reports to the General Manager

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Full-time salaried position requiring a 40-hour workweek on a regular basis
  • Determines information from construction plans and field surveys
  • Coordinates with the engineering team to ensure drawings meet project requirements
  • Designs/checks monotube and truss structures and foundations
  • Review and stamp acceptable work designed by other company engineers
  • Coordinates with key plant personnel to establish best practices for fabrication
  • Ability to provide assistance and resolution for special design situations in a timely manner (i.e. plant fabrication issues, field installation issues)
  • Advises the Sales Department with experience and expertise for estimating purposes
  • Regards quality and document control processes as key job functions

Desired qualities and skills include:

  • Highly organized and self-motivated, able to manage and prioritize multiple concurrent and competing challenges and projects
  • Good communication and relationship building skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Experience in engineering and materials fabrication environment, particularly in design or detailing, is highly preferable
  • Utilizes MS Excel daily (understanding of Visual Basic for Applications is a plus)
  • Drafting in AutoCAD (2018)(LISP programming a plus)

  • STAAD, LPile, MathCAD, AutoCAD, Tekla Structures
  • AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges, AASHTO Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires and Traffic Signals, ACI 318 Code, AWS Codes, ASTM Standards
  • AISC and various state DOT standard specifications
